A familiar face is gone from Charlotte Town Hall. Mayor Bill Davis announced at Tuesday night’s council meeting that long-time Town Clerk Bonnie Duke has retired. Duke has been a fixture on the historic courthouse square for 24 years as clerk under former Mayor Rick Hollis and Davis. Duke was not present at Tuesday’s meeting because she is recovering from back surgery, but Davis said she has already retired. The mayor said the council will come up with a plan to honor Duke for her years of service and asked the members to think of ideas for an appropriate way to recognize her. Moving forward, Davis said he wants the town to try to get by with just Jennifer Carlew at town hall. Carlew has worked for Charlotte for 11 years and has been the town recorder. Davis said instead of hiring somebody else, he believes Carlew can handle both jobs as recorder and clerk, which should save some money by cutting out a position.
