The USA U16 women’s basketball team rolled through its three group games with an average margin of victory of 71 points. The USA smashed Costa Rica 106-19 Friday in the FIBA U16 Women’s Championship in Cancun, Mexico. With the win, Team USA advances to the 4 pm Saturday semifinal game against the loser of Friday night’s Canada-Mexico match. The Bronze Medal Game will be Sunday at 3 pm and the Gold Medal Game at 6 pm. The win also qualifies the team for the 2014 FIBA U17 World Championship. Dickson County’s LeaLea Carter played 19 minutes in the 87-point win over Costa Rica Friday. The Lady Cougar sophomore missed all three field goal attempts and sank two free throws to finish with two points. She grabbed six rebounds and had five assists. Katie Lou Samuelson of Huntington Beach, California, led the USA with 20 points as seven players hit double digits. The US led 60-6 at halftime and cruised to the victory. The US previously beat Brazil by 56 points and Argentina by 70 and became the only team in the eight-team field to top the 100-point mark.
