The Drug Free Dickson Coalition will hear more on the problem of doctor shopping during its community meeting tonight. The coalition meets at 6 pm Thursday at the Dickson County Emergency Medical Service building on Cowan Road. Coordinator A.J. O’Dell said tonight’s guest speaker will be Patsy Crook from the Tennessee Office of the Inspector General, which is charged with oversight of TennCare fraud. In recent years the OIG has stepped up efforts to combat doctor shopping by TennCare enrollees, in which patients go from doctor to doctor seeking prescriptions for narcotics and other medications that are either abused personally or sold on the street. These efforts in part led to the formation of the state’s new controlled substance prescription database. The OIG has a cash rewards program for tips that lead to convictions for TennCare fraud. O’Dell also will report on the recent Drug-Take Back event held as part of a national effort promoted by the federal Drug Enforcement Administration. The event at FirstBank in Dickson collected over 50 pounds of prescription and over-the-counter pills for proper disposal.
