A Burns couple has been placed on probation and ordered to repay almost $87,000 they stole from their former employer. 58-year-old Bennie E. Godwin and 51-year-old Mary Beth Godwin pleaded no contest to a single count of theft each in Dickson County Circuit Court Monday. The couple was indicted in October for embezzling the money from Group Steel Erectors on Highway 70 in Dickson, where Bennie Godwin was listed as president of the company and Mary Beth Godwin was employed as an administrative assistant. The indictment charges the Godwins took money from the company for their personal use from January 2008 until December 2011. As part of a plea bargain agreement, the Godwins were both placed on probation for two years and ordered to make restitution of $86,929.95. Both resigned from Group Steel Erectors after a 2012 audit discovered the missing money.
