Creek Wood High School’s cheerleaders are seeking donations for a trip to Orlando, Florida, to compete in the Universal Cheerleaders Association’s National High School Cheerleading Championships. Creek Wood’s squad will be making its first trip to the national finals after qualifying with a fifth-place finish in the Smoky Mountain Championships in Sevierville earlier this month. Coached by Sherry Swaw and Veronica Walton, the squad hopes to raise about $20,000 for airfare and accommodations for the trip to the finals Feb. 8-9 at the Walt Disney World Resort. The UCA national finals are televised on ESPN and ESPN2. Creek Wood’s cheerleaders this season have finished second in their division at the Blackman High School competition, then second in a regional tournament in Southaven, Mississippi. After a fifth-place finish in the TSSAA state championship in Murfreesboro failed to earn a spot in the national finals, the squad had one last chance to qualify at the Sevierville competition and finished high enough to advance. Anyone wishing to help with the trip can send a donation to Creek Wood High School at 3499 Highway 47 North, Charlotte, TN 37036 and be sure to mark it for the cheerleaders or call the school at 740-6000 or Swaw at 419-9051. The team has a Dec. 24 deadline to pay for its airfare.
