The school zone for Dickson Elementary School will be moved off West Walnut Street during the school system’s Christmas break. Public Works Director Jeff Lewis told the city council Monday night that moving the school zone lights onto Bryant Avenue will cost about $1,062. The current 15-mile-per-hour school zone covers West Walnut Street from McKenzie to Freeman avenues. Lewis said the existing lights will be moved onto Bryant Avenue, the street that actually provides access to the school two blocks off West Walnut Street. The new school zone on Bryant will extend from West Walnut to McKenzie, covering the street in front of the school. He said Public Works will move the lights during the Christmas break while school is out to allow motorists time to adjust to the change. Lewis said discussions are continuing with school officials about the possibility of seeking assistance with the cost of installing sidewalks and crosswalks to help with pedestrian traffic to the school.
