Forestry Division giving away free seedlings Friday in Buckner Park for Arbor Day

The annual Forestry Division tree giveaway will be Friday, which is Arbor Day in Tennessee. While Arbor Day across the United States is celebrated the last Friday in April, the official Arbor Day celebration varies from state to state and Tennessee’s is celebrated the first Friday every March. The Tennessee Division of Forestry will be giving away free a variety of seedlings for landowners who look to the future by planting a tree. The only requirements are a suitable site, proper planting and protection from fire, drought and pests. The giveaway begins at 9 am Friday at the Buckner Park soccer field pavilion just past the National Guard Armory. Mike Tummins and Scotty Harrell with the Division of Forestry will be available to answer questions about site selection, planting techniques and tree care. Tummins recommends you bring a plastic bag at least 12 inches deep to keep seedling roots cool and moist until planting and there is a limited supply.
