The Dickson County High School Choral Department continues raising funds for its trip to Carnegie Hall with a Dixieland Ice Cream Social this Saturday at Holland Park. Tickets for the 7 pm event are $10 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under and include a cup of ice cream and an evening of Dixieland jazz music. Other treats donated by Purity Ice Cream also will be on sale. Performing will be the Music City Dixieland Jazz Band and Men of Harmony, a Goodlettsivlle-based, all-male barbershop chorus. The DCHS Choir Boosters are planning to raise more than $150,000 to help the 60-plus-member choir with its trip to New York in February to perform at Carnegie Hall. The choir was invited to join the State University of New York at Fredonia’s choir in a performance of Ralph Vaughan Williams’ “Dona Noce Pacem” over Presidents Day weekend. The SUNY-Fredonia choir is directed by 1984 Dickson County High School graduate Dr. Gerald Gray, who asked that his alma mater be invited to be a part of the special program. DCHS Choral Director Cindy Freeman said she also is working on scheduling at least one other performance in the New York area for that weekend. The boosters are holding a series of concerts featuring different styles of music to raise funds for the trip. The series kicked off with a night of bluegrass and barbecue and continues this Saturday with the Dixieland Ice Cream Social. For more information, visit Cougars2Carnegie.org.
