A Virginia-based group that calls its philosophy “race realism,” but is listed by other watchdog groups as “white supremacists,” will hold its 11th annual national conference this weekend at Montgomery Bell State Park. It is the second straight year American Renaissance has brought its conference to this area. The conference and its schedule of speakers on subjects regarding race also are expected to draw protests and a counter-conference. Founded by Jared Taylor and Henry Wollf, American Renaissance, or AmRen, calls its website of newsletters, articles and research the “Internet’s premier race-realist site.” However, the Alabama-based Southern Poverty Law Center has classified AmRen as a hate group. The Coalition to Shut Down AmRen has announced plans to protest Friday and Saturday outside the Montgomery Bell Resort and Conference Center while Not in Our State has scheduled a counter-conference with its own speakers and programs at the park’s visitor’s center near its front entrance. A state park system spokesperson said as a public state park, Montgomery Bell cannot discriminate in the use of its facilities as long as all park rules are followed. AmRen’s website claims the park’s inn is fully booked for the conference that starts Friday evening with registration and has a full schedule of speakers, seminars and a banquet Saturday before concluding Sunday morning. In the registration information for the conference, AmRen says nametags will be provided for participants, who have the option of using a “nom de guerre,” which means an assumed name and in French literally translates to “war name.” On its website, AmRen claims “race is an important aspect of individual and group identity, that different races build different societies that reflect their natures, and that it is entirely normal for whites (or for people of any other race) to want to be the majority race in their own homeland. If whites permit themselves to become a minority population, they will lose their civilization, their heritage, and even their existence as a distinct people.” AmRen claims the greatest crisis facing western civilization is the “crisis of race,” and even asserts that genetics determine a race’s level of intelligence and government’s effort to eliminating achievement gaps between white and minority students is “futile.” The Coalition to Shut Down AmRen and the Austin Peay Students for a Democratic Society will protest outside the conference center 4-6 pm Friday and 5:30-7 pm Saturday. The Not In Our State counter-conference is 10:30 am-6 pm Saturday.
