Lady Cougars hold off Waverly 43-29, move on to tournament’s 5th-place game Saturday

Dickson County’s Lady Cougars built a 24-point lead early in the third quarter then held off a Waverly rally to win 43-29 Friday in the Above the Rim Christmas Invitational in Hickman County. The win advances DCHS to the tournament’s fifth-place game at 1 pm Saturday against the winner of Hickman County and Union City. A 14-0 run sparked by eight points from Lea Lea Carter helped the Lady Cougars hold a 29-8 edge at halftime. Megan Billingsby and Lainey Reed connected to push Dickson County ahead 34-10 midway through the third. But a 19-5 run by Waverly over the end of the third and most of the fourth cut the lead to 10 before the Lady Cougars closed out with the final four points for the 14-point win, a big difference from the 42-point DCHS victory over Waverly just a week before. Carter led Dickson County with 16 points while MVP Megan Billingsby had nine. Following the tournament, Dickson County returns to action Jan. 4 hosting Northwest.
