Rachel Rife went 4-4, Ashley Scott had 3 RBI and Brooklin Lee pitched her second strong game of the day as the Dickson County Lady Cougars rolled over Munford 7-1 Wednesday night in the TSSAA state softball tournament in Murfreesboro. The win advances Dickson County to the Class AAA semifinals to play Smyrna today at 6 pm in the battle of the last two unbeaten teams in the double-elimination bracket. The Lady Cougars and Lady Bulldogs met in the last game of the regular season with Dickson County taking an 8-0 win. Just hours after striking out 7 and hitting a homerun in a 3-1 win over Riverdale, Lee struck out four and gave up four hits, including a solo homer, in six innings against Munford. Unlike the Riverdale game, Dickson County came out of the gate strong, loading the bases on consecutive singles by Payton Grove, Rife and Makray Odom in the first inning. Scott drew a walk to force in the first run of the game. Lee would follow with a 2-RBI double for what would turn out to be the game-winning run. Grove would score on a throwing error in the second for a 4-0 lead. Alex Stanford smashed a solo homer in the fourth for Munford’s only run. Dickson County answered with three more runs in the bottom half on an RBI single by Rife and a 2-RBI single by Scott. Heather Simmons relieved Lee in the seventh and gave up one hit while striking out one. Munford faces Maryville and Clarksville takes on Riverdale in elimination games this morning with the winners meeting at 4:00. Thirty minutes after the end of that game, Dickson County and Smyrna will battle for a spot in the championship game set for 3 pm Friday. Smyrna’s only previous trip to the softball state championship was a loss to Morristown East in 1980. Dickson County won its only state title in 2002.
