Dickson Middle School’s Lady Dragons will not get a chance to defend their 2012 Class AAA State Sectional title after being disqualified from postseason play because they played too many regular season games. Coach Barry Downs’ team finished 20-1 after playing 18 regular season games and three games in a holiday tournament. Tennessee Middle School Athletic Association rules allow middle schools to play only 18 games during the regular season and tournaments count as two games no matter how many are actually played, meaning the Lady Dragons’ official count was 20 games. The violation was reported after the Dickson girls had already won their first game of the Class AAA Area 1 Tournament 46-7 over West Creek Thursday where they were the number-one seed and overwhelming favorite. After an undefeated season and State Sectional title last year, the Lady Dragons are done for the year, defeated not on the court but in the rulebook. Dickson’s Dragons also will not defend their State Sectional title after being knocked out of the Area 1 Tournament by Northeast 43-30 Monday night. The Dragons held an early lead but the Eagles put on a 14-2 run in the third period that sealed Dickson’s fate. Braxton Robertson led the Dragons with eight points. After an unbeaten season and sectional title last year, the Dragons finish 8-11. Charlotte Middle School’s Tigers fell short of a Class AA State Sectional Title Monday night as they lost 51-36 to Lewisburg in the championship game at Lawrenceburg. Lewisburg wins its second consecutive sectional championship. After county schools won three sectional titles last year, only the William James Colonels were able to repeat in 2013.
