Dickson County’s LeaLea Carter scored four points and grabbed five rebounds as the USA smashed Brazil 76-20 in the opening round of the 2013 FIBA Americas U16 Championship in Cancun, Mexico, Wednesday. Asia Durr of Douglasville, Ga., led the Americans with 20 points as all 12 USA players scored in the runaway victory. A stretch of 21 straight points gave the USA a commanding 34-6 lead in the second quarter as the pressure defense forced Brazil into numerous turnovers. A rising sophomore at Dickson County High School, Carter played 15 minutes and hit a three-pointer and one of four free throws. She grabbed one offensive and four defensive boards as the US team out-rebounded Brazil 53-33. The USA faces Argentina at 6 pm Thursday and closes group play Friday against Costa Rica. Argentina beat Costa Rica 61-41 in Wednesday’s first round. The seeded tournament begins Saturday. The USA-Argentina came will stream live at FIBAAmericas.com.
