Petition turned in to put liquor referendum on ballot in Charlotte again

Supporters of a retail liquor referendum in Charlotte have turned in a petition to get the question on the Nov. 6 ballot again. An identical measure failed by seven votes in 2010. Election Administrator Linda Medley said since the deadline for the referendum is Sept. 7, the office will wait to certify the petition, but supporters say they have more than enough signatures to satisfy the minimum of 36 registered voters. The referendum will be whether to allow retail liquor sales only and not liquor by the drink. The deadline to register to vote in the Nov. 6 election is Oct. 8.
