The preliminary hearing for a man charged with a deadly New Year’s Day shooting during an alleged drug deal was postponed again in Dickson Municipal Court Thursday. Judge Reese Holley rescheduled the hearing for 23-year-old Justin Keith Treece of McNairy County for June 6. In announcing the fourth date for the hearing, Holley said the prosecution is still waiting for the results of “scientific testing” to come back from the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation’s crime lab before it will be ready to proceed. Treece is charged with the fatal shooting of 29-year-old Matthew Draper and wounding of 23-year-old Cody Jackson, cousins from Hartsville, during what investigators have called a “drug deal gone bad” in the parking lot of the Holiday Inn Express in Dickson on Jan. 1. An affidavit says Treece and his girlfriend, 20-year-old Jessie Mulder of Enville, had arranged to meet Draper and Jackson for a drug transaction and around 11:15 New Year’s night, Treece pulled a small-caliber handgun and shot Draper in the chest and Jackson in the left arm. The affidavit does not say what drugs were alleged to be involved in the transaction and who was buying or selling. Jackson drove himself and Draper to Horizon Medical Center where Draper died and Jackson was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, but doctors chose to leave the bullet in his arm. Treece was arrested Jan. 6 following a pursuit in a wooded area of McNairy County. Treece is charged with first-degree felony murder and attempted first-degree felony murder and remains in the Dickson County Jail on $1 million bond. Mulder, who showed up Jan. 5 at her mother’s West Tennessee home, has not been charged and is reported to be cooperating with the investigation.
