Report lists 17 coaching positions being filled by personnel not employed by local school system

After discussion in May on finding school system employees to fill extracurricular coaching positions, the monthly personnel report from the Dickson County Board of Education shows at least 17 supplemented jobs going to people who don’t work for the system. The report is part of the package presented to Dickson County School Board members for tonight’s final meeting before the start of the new school year next week. In May, several board members voiced concerns over the number of coaching positions that are filled by non-faculty personnel, prompted by a request for an out-of-state trip to a middle school cheerleading camp that would not have been supervised by a school system employee. At that meeting, Chairman Tim Potter said with over 1,000 employees the school system should make it a priority to find staff members willing to fill the positions. “I think we need to step back and evaluate whether or not we even need to have some of these activities if we can’t find an employee of the school system who is willing to take part in it,” Potter said. Director of Schools Dr. Danny Weeks said he would ask Human Resources Director Hillary Hall to prepare a list of all extracurricular activities and how many are coached or supervised by non-faculty personnel. The monthly personnel report being presented tonight shows non-faculty personnel being assigned as head wrestling coach at Dickson County High School, head baseball, volleyball and boys basketball coaches at William James Middle School, head volleyball and cheerleading coaches at Dickson Middle School and various assistant coaching positions at the middle and high schools. Under Dickson County school system policy, all coaching positions filled by non-faculty personnel are re-opened each year to see if any school system personnel will fill the positions. Two months ago there were 35 supplemented positions listed in the school system’s job openings. The Dickson County School Board holds its final meeting before the start of school Aug. 1 at 7:00 tonight.
