State Senator Jim Summerville of Dickson remains hospitalized in Nashville after undergoing unexpected surgery Wednesday. A statement from the freshman Republican’s office says Summerville became ill at his Dickson home and was transported to a Nashville hospital where he underwent surgery. The statement does not provide any information on the nature of the illness or surgery. “The surgery went well and he is expected to stay in the hospital for the next several days,” the statement says. Summerville’s bill prohibiting state government from giving preferences based on race, gender or ethnicity in hiring is scheduled for debate in the Senate Calendar Committee today. His bill prohibiting preferences in hiring by local school systems passed in the Senate last week but failed in a vote by the House Education Subcommittee yesterday. The two bills are part of a package of bills introduced this year by Summerville to eliminate affirmative action practices in Tennessee.
