A special safety review committee assembled by Dickson County Schools Director Dr. Danny Weeks will hold its first meeting next week to begin assessing the current systems in place to protect students and looking at improvements that can be made. Director of Student Services Steve Sorrells told the school board Thursday night that he is already doing preliminary research into ideas and programs that exist elsewhere and will be attending several upcoming safe school seminars and workshops. The school board asked Weeks to assess the system’s status during a work session on its long-range building program following the school shooting in Connecticut. Weeks said he would ask Sorrells to chair that committee. Sorrells said the current members are school board member and Dickson Police Chief Ricky Chandler, Dickson County Emergency Medical Services and acting Emergency Management Agency Director Donny Bear, Dickson Elementary School Principal Eve Larkins, William James Middle School Principal Jan Ford and Jay Johnson, a parent who has served multiple tours of duty in the Middle East. Sorrells said he has already begun an outline of subjects to be reviewed, including building design, an effective crisis management plan, community resources and support organizations, the overall climate in schools, school resource officers, staff training and intervention and prevention programs. The safety review committee plans to meet for the first time Thursday and board Chairman Tim Potter asked for regular updates to be provided to the board.
