With the start of school coming up, Tennessee will hold its 9th annual biannual Sales Tax Holiday Aug 2-4. The three-day tax holiday begins at 12:01 am Friday, Aug. 2, and ends at 11:59 pm Sunday, Aug. 4. During this period, shoppers can save the state’s almost 10 percent sales tax on purchases of selected clothing, school and art supplies and certain computer purchases. Clothing and school supply purchases of items with a price of $100 or less and computers with a price of $1,500 or less are eligible under certain restrictions. Eligible clothing purchases include shirts, dresses, pants, coats, gloves, hoisery, neckties, belts, sneakers, shoes, athletic and school uniforms and more. The list of approved items for school supplies includes binders, book bags, calculators, tape, chalk, crayons, erasers, folders, glue, pens, pencils, lunch boxes, notebooks, paper, rulers and scissors. Art supplies can include clay, glazes, acrylic, tempera and oil paints, paintbrushes for art, sketch and drawing pads and watercolors. Computer purchases can include laptops, desktop computers, tablets, CPUs and various components such as monitor, keyboard, mouse, cables and pre-loaded software.
