Dickson County UT Extension and Horizon Medical Center present a cooking school that highlights the importance of portion control. The “That’s A Serving?” cooking school will be 6-8 pm Tuesday, Nov. 6, in the 3rd floor East Pavilion conference room at Horizon. The program will focus on proper portion sizes, healthy cooking techniques and other nutrition guidelines that can help reduce the risk for chronic disease including certain types of cancer. Participants will be able to sample the featured dishes and receive the recipes and other educational information. “Our country is experiencing ‘portion distortion.’ This has had a tremendous impact on our nation’s health,” said Janet Cluck of the Dickson County UT Extension. “Getting a handle on our portion sizes is a major step toward a healthier lifestyle and improved health.” Next week’s cooking school is funded by a TEAM UP Tennessee grant from the state Department of Health and is free to participants. Those planning to attend the cooking school are asked to register by calling TriStar Medline at 342-1919 or the UT Extension office at 446-2788.
