A Vanleer man is believed to have died when a fire consumed his home Saturday night. The name of the victim has not officially been released but Dickson County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Jerone Holt confirmed that a body was found in a home destroyed by fire at 4900 Highway 49 West in Vanleer and an investigation is under way. Neighbors and friends have identified the victim as Michael A. Hudgins, who is reported to have lived alone at the residence. A neighbor spotted smoke coming from the home around 10 pm Saturday and tried to get into the home to search for the resident but said the flames and smoke were too intense. The Vanleer and Cumberland Furnace volunteer fire departments and Dickson County Rescue Squad responded to the blaze and reported flames had spread throughout the home by the time they arrived. The cause of the fire was not immediately known and it remains under investigation by the state fire marshal’s office. Saturday night’s fire marks the third fire-related fatality in Dickson County in less than a year. Peggy Clarkson died in a fire at her Eastwood home in Dickson June 24 and Matthew B. Neal was killed when flames consumed his Loggins Road home outside Charlotte July 11.
