Dickson Mayor Don Weiss Jr. reappointed all of the city’s department heads Monday night but did away with the director of public safety position the council created eight years ago. The city council unanimously approved the mayor’s recommendation that Rydell Wesson be reappointed city administrator and Councilman Mike Legg continue to serve as vice mayor. Following the retirement of Dickson Fire Department Chief Clay Tidwell in 2005, Weiss asked the council to create the public safety director position and named police department Chief Rick Chandler to serve the dual role while Richard Greer was named fire department commander. Greer was promoted to chief of the department in December 2009. Weiss said with the experience Greer now has operating the department he believes it is no longer necessary to have Chandler in the dual role overseeing both departments and recommended that the public safety director title be eliminated. The departmental appointments include Chandler as police chief, Greer as fire chief, Jeff Lewis as director of Public Works, Missy Sullivan as municipal court clerk, Jason Pilkinton as planning and zoning director, Betty Williams as Dickson Senior Citizens Center director, Jarell Lankford as cemetery director, Angie Brown as tax collector, Tammy Dotson as treasurer and Dianne Shelton as recorder. The longest-tenured member of the city council, Legg was elected to his seventh four-year term in September. Weiss also reappointed Jerry Smith as city attorney. Wesson has officially been city administrator since April 2012 after having served as acting administrator since October 2011 following the retirement of Tom Waychoff. The mayor said he would make the rest of his council appointments for committees at the Nov. 18 Finance and Management Committee meeting.
