DICKSON COUNTY, TN – September 29, 2023 – The engines are revving up for the much-anticipated return of planes, trucks, and automobiles to the Dickson Municipal Airport. Mark your calendars for Saturday, October 7, as the Dickson Parks and Recreation Department presents its 18th Touch A Truck event, coinciding with the Dickson Municipal Airport’s 10th Fly-In. The festivities will take place from 10 am to 2 pm at Pack Field, located at 2372 Sylvia Road. Best of all, the event is free to attend, and it carries a special cause as the Humane Society of Dickson County will be on-site, accepting donations to support the care of shelter animals.
This event promises thrills for children of all ages, offering an up-close experience with a wide array of emergency and working vehicles as part of the Touch A Truck segment. In addition, the Fly-In will introduce a variety of small aircraft into the mix, including the opportunity for airplane rides over scenic Dickson County.
From fire trucks, police cars, motorcycles, and ambulances to dump trucks, construction equipment, and tractors, Touch A Truck brings these fascinating vehicles within arm’s reach of curious kids.
The synergy between Touch A Truck and the Fly-In began in 2018 when the Parks and Recreation Department moved the event to the Dickson County Municipal Airport-Pack Field. Unfortunately, the event had to be canceled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, it made a triumphant return in 2021 with a toy drive benefiting the children of Waverly after the devastating flood of August 21, 2021.
This year’s event will support June’s Pet Haven and Bark Park, the Humane Society’s shelter on Tennsco Drive. With an overcrowding crisis at the shelter, donations of dog and cat food, bleach, litter, towels, blankets, detergent, cleaning products, and cash will be gratefully accepted.
Molly Adams, programs coordinator for the Dickson Parks and Recreation Department, expressed, “Touch A Truck has been one of the Parks Department’s most popular annual events for more than 17 years. Joining forces with the airport to add airplanes has only increased interest in the event.”
The event will feature a Kidzone with an inflatable slide, face painting, and a balloon artist, ensuring a fun-filled day for the whole family. Concession stands will be available to keep everyone fueled for the excitement.
For those looking to take their adventure to new heights, a limited number of airplane rides will be offered by some of the attending pilots. Tickets for these rides will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis, priced at $30 for adults and $15 for children aged 12 and under.
Due to limited parking at the airport, attendees are encouraged to park near the south end of the runway in a field adjacent to the Airport Market at 2306 Sylvia Road. There will be signage to direct people to the parking area, and shuttle buses will be available to transport visitors to and from the airport throughout the event.
The Fly-In was introduced in 2012 as part of an annual 2nd Century of Flight celebration by the Dickson Municipal Airport-Pack Field. During these celebrations, the airport unveiled its Aviation Wall of Fame, which pays tribute to aviation pioneers and contributors such as Garland Pack, Bruce Peery, Larry Horn, Lt. Col. Glenn Hicks, and Buford “Booty” Reed.
